چکیده

Unstructured overlay networks are driven by simple protocols that are easy to analyze and implement. The lack of structure, however, leads to weak message delivery guarantees and poor scaling. Structured overlays impose a global overlay topology that is then maintained by all peers in a complex protocol. In contrast to unstructured approaches the structured overlays are efficient and scalable, but leave little flexibility in how their topology can be adapted to the needs of the application. We propose a generic overlay maintenance and routing algorithm that combines the simplicity of the unstructured overlays and the scalability of the structured approaches, while allowing the application to define its own peer identifier space. The overlay topology is not explicitly defined but emerges in a self-organized way as the result of simple maintenance rules. Independently of the identifier space used, our algorithm exhibits logarithmic scaling of the average routing path length and the average

Providing Administrative Control and Autonomy in Structured Peer-to-Peer Overlays

Structured peer-to-peer (p2p) overlay networks provide a decentralized, self-organizing substrate for distributed applications and support powerful abstractions such as distributed hash tables (DHTs) and group communication. However, in most of these systems, lack of control over key placement and routing paths raises concerns over autonomy, administrative control and accountability of particip...

Practical Algorithms for Size Estimation in Large and Dynamic Groups

Large-scale distributed systems may be required to estimate the number of non-faulty processes present in the group at a given point of time. The problem is related to aggregation, and several solutions have been proposed. In this paper, we present two new sampling-based algorithms for estimation in dynamic groups (i.e., where processes are constantly joining and crashing), and thoroughly evalu...

Maelstrom: Churn as Shelter

Structured overlays are an important and powerful class of overlay networks that has emerged in recent years. They are typically targeted at peer-to-peer deployments involving millions of user-managed machines on the Internet. In this paper we address routing-table poisoning attacks against structured overlays, in which adversaries attempt to intercept traffic and control the system by convinci...

Securing Identity Assignment Using Implicit Certificates in P2P Overlays

The security of the Peer-to-Peer (P2P) overlays networks has been questioned for years. Many works have been proposed to provide secure routing, anonymity, reputation systems, confidentiality, etc. However, the identity assignment has been less considered. These networks are designed so that each user has a unique identifier (nodeID), but the most of identity assignment systems allow malicious ...
